The prices are well above inflation. Well above convenience prices. It's surprising that the freezers are breaking so often. You would think they would have the money to fix or replace them. I've had food poisoning twice. They replaced the items that made me sick. Which was thoughtful...however I didn't want to get sick again.
I will say that for them. If you ever have an issue with a product they will replace it or refund you without a fuss. It's hard to find a business that will do that anymore.
There needs to be another grocery store in town to give them some direct competition. Otherwise they will continue to have a monopoly in the town over super high prices.
Some of the staff is friendly.

The old TV show cheers.... That's how it feels walking into this store. The people who work there make it a great place. It's kinda pricey, but you are paying for convenience. Overall one of my hands down fave small town stores. It's the people who work there, they make it awesome.

Bought a box of snack cakes for my brother. He ate two of them before noticing one was slightly open and moldy. Checked the expiration and it was 5 months past the expiration. I didn’t have the receipt anymore so no use returning but it’s obviously concerning that there is food sitting on the shelves there 5 months past expiration. Also they are extremely, extremely overpriced.

We were camping nearby and I wanted blueberry pancakes for breakfast the next day. This store had everything we needed. I have gotten into the habit of checking the bottom of the blueberry container to check for mold. There were several moldy ones before I found a good one. The cashier was very nice. Always bring cash with you to this store. Their system for cards went down right when we were getting ready to pay, and apparently it happens often there according to the customers we heard grumbling.

Really nice little store with a great selection of things. The branded spices are awesome, and so are the baked goods. Definitely a fantastic small town store. The fried chicken is fantastic too.

Throwaway email to protect my privacy as a local customer.
Good store with a fair selection, the owner is a wonderful man who is fair with his employees, and is very understanding of personal circumstances.
Subway is concerning- the few people that are good workers seem to be treated unfairly by subway management.
I’ve heard they are violating federal labor laws by forbidding their employees from sharing their wages.
There are rumors of one of the female management having relationships with minors and her own workers is concerning too.
The turn around rate seems fairly high.

I feel if they put their workers first more often it might be a better place for customers and employees alike. As a business they do a good job, but I feel there is room for improvement as a whole.

Very little fresh produce, what was available was either overly ripe, or going bad. Most of their freezer section had freezer burn. There was clods of dust on their cheese. To top it all off, mask policy was not enforced for customers or employees. I will never shop there again.

For its size and location (very small town), Dayton Mercantile rates 5 stars. It's clean, well-stocked with a broad variety of standard grocery items, and has a helpful, friendly staff. Fresh meat, with in-store butchers, is a huge plus, as are the quality and selection of fresh produce. Being an IGA affiliate, they offer good everyday prices and excellent weekly sales. However, if fresh seafood or gourmet cheeses (or gourmet anything) are life necessities for you, you'll be disappointed and will need to drive to a larger town. That said, you can't beat it for everday grocery shopping. Did I mention the small bakery, deli, and Subway? Yep, it's got those as well. Great store!
