San Diego National Wildlife Refuge (not to be confused with San Diego Bay NWR) is a great place to hike. The gravel parking lot is big enough to accommodate everything from cars to busses. The parking lot opens every morning at 6:30 and closes at around dusk. It is located on Route 94/Campo Road. The time listed on Google Maps say the Refuge is only open on Wednesdays from 8 to 6 but that must be for an office located somewhere else. There are no facilities on this Refuge so bring water, etc. The Refuge has many miles of trails, but they aren’t well marked. There are no signs that say what a trail’s name is or its distance. There are a few a few signposts with one or three arrow signs <- -> on them pointing in different directions indicating that a trail goes “that way.” (Thanks Captain Obvious.) At one point I reached a trail intersection where there were about 6 options and no signs, so I broke out Google Maps to figure out which way to go. People bring their dogs and horses on the trails and those critters leave trail markers, so mind where you step…

Such a nice, quiet place. Even though I went late in the morning it was not crowded. Wish I knew the Mt names. I reached the top of a mountain that had a flag. You can see mt miguel across. Loved it.

We ended here by mistake. Husband entered SD national wildlife refuge instead of SD Bay National Wildlife Refuge. It's nice but we prefer shade trails. People bring their horses to ride. There's a self service fee to park at the entrance.

Hiked up to rock house. Tough climb if you are out of shape, don't think you can ride your bike up it but if you carry your bike up it's a steep and fun ride down. Bring water!
