I live up the block and have returned to DTLA after 28 years, and the Taiwanese food I know is from Seattle and sometimes traveling via Taipei. Their friend anchovies & peanuts were like the best anywhere & the soup and sandwich very good. The service on Saturday at 3 PM was standout. My interest is more in repeat frequent habit building neighborly spots than passing fad hip spots. Pine & Crane feels good as neighbor: Anthony & Will feel like best neighbors one can have

I was actually pleasantly surprised. As someone who has been to Taiwan several times and eaten Taiwanese food a lot I can say that this place is pretty good. We came on a Saturday night at 5pm and it was already mostly filled. You go in and order first, then get seated by the host. We ordered the Dan Dan mien $12, minced pork rice $10.50, beef roll $10 and the seaweed cold dish $4.75. Everything was pretty reasonably priced especially for Silverlake. I love the ambiance very cozy eclectic feel. The beef rolls were less greasy and felt fresher because of the cucumber that they put in it. The Dan Dan mien was a little too saucy with not enough spice but if you put some of the chili oil it’s perfect. And the minced pork rice is the perfect saucy fatty deliciousness. The egg is perfectly seasoned with some pickled radish on top. I would definitely stop by again if I’m in the area.

Parking is difficult, had to drive around the block several times to find a spot. If you go during peak hours, be ready for the cue line to order your food. It was very crowded the night we visited. Seatings are limited so they made us wait outside while they cook our food. Once we were seated and had our first bite, we forgot all about the long wait and the slow service. Very delicious and comforting food for the soul. I recommend the Beef Roll, Beef Noodle soup, Dan Dan Noodles, and Three Cup Chicken. Good portions. Very relax ambience. Will definitely come back. Highly recommended!

Had the scallion pancake and the Dan Dan noodles, and my wife had the won ton noodle soup. food was absolutely amazing would definitely come back here again. It was very busy on Saturday afternoon, the seating arrangements consist of communal and private tables however the private tables are are a bit too close to each other

A casual dining spot for those who seek to have very authentic Taiwanese food. I never knew this area was so trending even on Thursday night. There was a long line, but people got seated pretty fast. The food came out fast too( almost like any fast food chains). The quality of food was on another level tho. It was like eating mom’s food, very comforting, warm, and tasty! I added the black vinegar on almost every bite throughout the meal and I was glad to discover a new seasoning. So good with everything. The staff were very friendly, attentive, and stylish! (Everyone looked so cool ?) wanna come back and try other dishes soon:)

If you are looking for an authentic Taiwanese food, this might not be the best option for you. However, if you are looking for a place to introduce your (our) hometown food to anyone from different backgrounds, I think Pine and Crane has done a really good job of tailoring the flavors of the dishes to suit everyone’s tastes.
We love the soup of the beef noodles especially!

We were so excited to eat Taiwanese food since we enjoyed our visits there and we were fortunate to also have Taiwanese friends who cooked at home. I really wish I could rate Pine and Crane higher but sharing my honest view: good parts are nice atmosphere and food came out pretty quickly. The pork potstickers were very good as well as the shrimp wonton. Both were flavourful, good amount of filling and cooked well with a nice pan fried crisp at the bottom of the potstickers. The minced pork over rice was decent…a little salty but overall average in comparison to others. Disappointing were the staple Taiwanese items…the beef noodle had 3 small pieces of beef and small spoonful of the pickled green. Lack of meat would be fine if the broth had rich flavor but it lacked any flavour or depth. Almost tasted like water with some soy sauce. The scallion pancake had hardly any scallions and I’ve never had such a dry and hard pancake. These should flakey and light. The frozen ones ar grocery store are 100% better so a big miss by the restaurant.
