I just came across the video on PBS.Very interesting. Silverton is very different than where I live in Japan(1 million population). I hope that this store will carry on by The Watsons or some other good people.

I wish, not to be a millionaire but rather someone who makes enough to send something like $100000 to places like this without having to go broke. Other than reviews I can't do anything, but rest assured... much love from Texas!!

Check your receipt! Wife charged $18.80 for $7.90 pork chops and $3.50 for $1.49 fly swatter. Took 3 employees & mgr & 20 min to straighten out w/ mgrs attitude that we ‘had choices’ & they were trying. Not saying don’t shop there just watch what is charged & you may have to be patient w/ folks who don’t know their jobs. Update 10/15 - it is a credit to the store to address our July issue. Still at the time of incident instead of being pleasant and apologizing, the staff working, we 'were the problem'. The store is nice and has a lot of stock so don't not try them. Best in the coming winter season.

Decent prices for this small mountain town grocery. Lots of items in this store. It looks little but it is bigger than what you think.

Great people who own and run this grocery.

Much more impressive than it appears from the outside. You could easily get by in this quaint grocery. Has everything that a larger store would have, just in smaller quantity and less variety. As far as pricing goes, it’s understandable for things to cost more in the middle of the mountains at 9,000ft. We purchased some snack items for our day trip drive. There’s also ice, firewood, and some basic house goods.

We did not run into any problems with employees. Just interacted with the younger guy at the counter who was cordial and efficient enough.

Employee in the store called the police because I was in the store with my service dog. She threatened me and told me I needed to leave. After I explained to her that she is my service dog because I have a disability and the ADA provides her every right to be in the establishment with me, she told me to "prove it". I told her she isn't allowed to ask me that and asked if she knew the only two questions they're allowed to ask me under the ADA protected rights. She huffed and said "I'm calling the police." Absolutely rude and disappointing an establishment would treat someone with a disability in this manner.

UPDATE - Since the owner has responded, I wanted to point out a few things wrong here. I'm not sure what Colorado law the owner is referring to, but an establishment is required to provide reasonable accommodations to a disabled individual utilizing a service animal. These rights are protected by a federal law under Americans with Disabilities Act Titles II & III.

Silverton Grocery is not allowed to ask for documentation or demonstration. Not all service animals are bought from a training organization, they're also protected under the ADA rights to be personally trained by the owner for specific tasks. The ADA rights also only permit an establishment to ask two questions: 1) is it a service animal, and 2) what task does the service animal provide.

Service animal documentation by federal law is not required. Unfortunately, this is marred by certain individuals that may or may not have paid a small fee for a piece of paper stating their animal is a "service animal" to bypass actual qualifications for having the right to utilize a service animal. Any request for documentation can only be asked for an employment opportunity, and even then, under ADA Title I, this documentation has nothing to do with the actual service animal itself.

I thought, at the time, it was moot when the employee also stated "I can't tell it is a service dog" and I didn't mention it in the original review as I got my actual point across anyway, but the ADA rights also do not require a service animal to be badged, vested, labeled, or identified with any kind of label. It is a COURTESY to people and establishments everywhere that they're badged/labeled as such. My dog was wearing a two-inch-wide black collar with bright red letters that said, "SERVICE DOG".

Even if there is a Colorado state law requiring documentation, I didn't go to law school but I'm pretty sure a federal law trumps a state law in this regard.
