The short version for those who do not want to read all this.
Bait and switch.
Double charged me.
Charged me for more square feet than I used.
I was looking for counter tops at Home Depot and on my way home I saw Coastal Cabinetry. I decided to check them out. I went in and was greeted promptly by the owners son. He was extremely nice and knowledgeable. He showed me quartz counter tops in different price point categories. I picked and paid for the one I wanted which was in the top tier.
I paid for 35 square feet and we agreed that if it was more, I would pay the difference and if it was less he would reimburse me. I walked out the store pleased on my purchase.
Nearing the date of installation, I received a text from the owner. It was a picture of a counter top. This is where I should have known something was wrong. Why was he sending me a picture of a counter top? I immediately called him and said that doesn't look like the one we picked. He promised me that was the one I picked. I went into the store to look at the sample to make sure and the sample was gone, he said sometimes customers take them but assured me that it was the one I picked.
The day of installation, I was called in to make the final payment. I explained that the amount has to be adjusted because I was only using 31. something square feet. He said according to his calculations it was 36 square feet so, I told him to send me a diagram of the sizes being made. Upon receiving the diagram, I saw that the guy who came to measure made a mistake. I specifically asked for 2 pieces of counter top in the bathroom so, that I can easily remove the small one for toilet access. One was 31x23 and the other 27x6. His guy ignored this and made me one full piece. Not only did he make it one full piece but instead of charging me for a piece 58x23 he inverted the numbers and made a piece 85x23. The owner refused to compensate me for this mistake. I kept telling him I cannot pay for counter top I didn't order or need. He only lowered the price a few dollars instead of the actual square foot price.
The day I went to make the final payment he swiped my credit card twice and said it was denied so, I went to the bank and paid him in cash. A few days later, I notice my bank account was low. I looked through the history and saw he did charge me by card and I also paid him in cash.
(I PAID HIM TWICE).
When I called to ask him to fix it he told me to call the bank and tell them to reverse it. Ladies and gentleman, that is not how that works, he was suppose to reimburse me. Regardless, I had to go through my bank to start a dispute, after close to a month, I found out, I lost the dispute because the owner of Coastal Cabinets (Alex) spoke to my bank and told them the charge was correct. He told me to tell my bank to take the money back, then told my bank it was a good charge. I had to escalate the case to a manager of Citibank and show him the text between me and Coastal Cabinets, showing my bank that he admitted to owing me the money on at least three occasions.
I asked Alex from Coastal Cabinets for my money on February 17, 2020 and finally today May 1, 2020 my bank took my side and gave me the money back $872.
On top of all this, I went into the store while he wasn't there one day and found the sample of the counter top I chose. It was not the one installed. He pulled a "bait and switch" on me. The counter top we chose was about 10 to 15 dollars more a square foot than the one we received. Therefore, I am still at a loss.
I'm still owed about $580.
I always try to give small mom and pop shops some business and this is what happens. Next time, I'll stick to big box stores.
