Blennerhassett Mansion – A Journey Back in Time on the Jewel of West Virginia

If you’ve ever wanted to take a step back into the early 19th century, surrounded by intrigue, romance, and history, Blennerhassett Island Historical State Park is the place to go, with its crown jewel being the meticulously recreated Blennerhassett Mansion.

A trip to the island is like a living history lesson. As soon as you set foot on the island, you’re whisked away to an era when Harman and Margaret Blennerhassett, an Irish aristocratic couple, called this place home. The mansion itself, a beautiful Palladian-style estate, rises from the lush greenery like a grand vision of times gone by. Though the original burned down in 1811, the reconstruction is so authentic you can practically hear the echoes of past conversations between its elegant walls.

But it’s not just the history that makes this place so special; it’s the dedication of the West Virginia State Park system. They’ve gone above and beyond to preserve the spirit of the Blennerhassetts, as well as the natural beauty of the island. From the ferry ride across the Ohio River to the guided tours through the mansion, every aspect of the park is a celebration of the state’s rich history and its commitment to making that history accessible to everyone.

The mansion’s interior is just as stunning as its exterior. The period furniture, detailed wallpapers, and fascinating artifacts take you right back to the early 1800s, when the Blennerhassetts were known for hosting extravagant parties with the likes of Aaron Burr in attendance. Yes, that Aaron Burr. There’s something quite thrilling about walking through rooms that witnessed plots of political power, treason, and scandal. It’s West Virginia’s own version of a real-life drama!

And don’t miss the grounds! The beautifully manicured lawns, gardens, and trails provide the perfect setting for a peaceful afternoon of exploration. Whether you're taking a leisurely horse-drawn carriage ride or just relaxing under a towering sycamore, the serenity of the island is a reminder of why this was such an idyllic escape for its original owners.

The staff at Blennerhassett Island State Park are incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about the history they’re preserving. The guides who take you through the mansion weave such engaging stories, you’ll feel as though you’ve personally met the Blennerhassetts themselves. And the park’s visitor center is a treasure trove of information, offering exhibits and films that delve even deeper into the island’s past.

In addition to the mansion, the park offers plenty of activities for visitors of all ages. You can rent bikes, paddle through the river, or simply enjoy the scenic beauty of the island, with the Ohio River lazily winding its way around you. The park is a real testament to the West Virginia State Parks system’s commitment to keeping history alive while providing a peaceful retreat from the hustle and bustle of modern life.

So, whether you’re a history buff, a nature lover, or just looking for a unique experience, Blennerhassett Island is a must-visit. It’s a little slice of paradise nestled right in the Ohio River, and it’s proof that West Virginia’s state parks are second to none when it comes to preserving both the natural beauty and the incredible stories of our past. Five stars for a five-star park!

This house is a reconstruction, but don't let that bother you. It's been faithfully built, with the use of inventories and accurate descriptions to depict a grand Federal-style house that would look right at home in Tidewater Virginia. We know, based on Blennerhassett's wealth and taste, that his house looked like this. It was known to be the finest house in frontier Virginia, and that's saying something. As it is, the architecture is stunning, but the story of Harman and his (cousin) wife is quite a tale too, as is that of Aaron Burr and his association with this place. Your guide will tell these stories to you with enthusiasm. If you're anywhere near Parkersburg, or Marietta, Ohio, this is a must-do destination, particularly if you have an interest in American history. The surrounding park (the rest of the island) is lovely too. You get here on a ferry from Parkersburg.

Blennerhassett Island & Mansion is a Wonderful place to visit ! Beautiful Place ! Our Mansion Tour was cut short due to some people talking and the Tour Guide Reprimanding them a little inappropriately. TheTour just fell apart and people just started leaving. Hopefully this was a rare incident. I would still highly recommend this place !

Beautiful mansion rebuilt by West Virginia in State Park on island named after the Blennerhassett family protecting it from Ohio River floods. It's definitely worth a visit. Ferry is the only way to reach the island; check schedules. Take the horse pulled wagon ride! And one can rent bicycles to ride around the island.

I was so impressed at the knowledge and story-telling ability of our tour guide. He was able to answer all questions. He neither sounded like a recorded message nor like he was trying to think up what to say.

After reading about Blennerhassett, I was not disappointed with seeing the island or the presentation. Everyone was friendly and competent.

For the most part a great experience!! Beautiful island, boat ride, and surroundings! One of the staff decided to yell at me about not having a ticket when I did, and that left a bad taste in my mouth. Otherwise, an interesting adventure!!
