Mowbray is the Earl of metalworkers. Besides being an affable gentleman, his devout skills span all types of metalwork from aluminum to bronze and structural to sculptural. I recently hired him to fabricate an “active” mounted spindle, to hang a 19th century ship’s wheel in our entryway. He was entrusted with possession of the relic for fabrication and he returned it safe and sound with the mount finished in one week. I admit that the finished product was better than what we had in mind. We are thrilled with the result and would gladly hire him for future projects.

Tom Mowbray is the first person I think of for fabrication of metal on my projects. In 2002 I built two and a half story custom post and beam addition to my home with most of the steel plate connectors exposed to view. Tom fabricated all of the 1/2” thick steel plate connectors that hold the wood columns and beams together including specially designed base plates fastening the columns to the footings at the finished floor level. Tom fabricated 22 connector plates in total including flat plate, L-shaped, T-shaped, and base plates all of which required a high degree of quality welding since these connectors are part of the primary structure for my home. The contractor measured the bolt holes drilled in the connector plates, transposed those measurements to the wood beams, and drilled through the beams and hit the holes in the steel plates with 100 percent accuracy. The accuracy of the holes drilled through the steel connector plates and the quality of the welding done, and the high degree craftsmanship demonstrated by Tom have contributed greatly to the structural strength and aesthetic appearance of my home for almost two decades.
