I went into the co-op a few days ago hoping to close out my Christmas shopping. I left within 15 minutes of arriving due to a very upsetting and frankly, racist, conversation I overheard between the person behind the Little Silver Shop pop up and an employee of the store. The store employee said something about “the accents coming out” and the Little Silver Shop vendor launched into the most stereotypical, racist, Simpson’s “Apu” style accent, running his mouth about working at a gas station and mostly selling scratch offs. The store employee was laughing along with him the entire time.

Now, I believe the reason he felt comfortable making this offensive “joke” and she felt comfortable laughing is because I and the other patrons in the store were all white. Maybe some would let that slide, but it put such a sour taste in my mouth that I left without purchasing anything.

I can’t in good conscience ignore what I heard, so I’m posting it here in hopes they choose to do the right thing and apologize. The Farmington Valley has become a lot more diverse in the time I’ve lived here and that is a WONDERFUL thing. It’s disgusting to me that a small business owner/employee would not only allow but ENCOURAGE that kind of racist behavior. I’d love to shop small but not if this is who I’m supporting by doing so. Please do better.

Great little shop with nice little things for everyone! Great for gift shopping. They moved across the way into the little area of shops by the river in case you can’t find it!
